Grids: making the Vortex site

By Keith Martin

SoftPress Freeway provides some extremely designer-friendly tools and features for producing professionally and creatively constructive sites.
The flexible master page and styles support is very useful, but the ability to place a regular, customisable grid structure, as well as custom guides, makes producing clean page layouts pleasingly simple. Even better, when a page is constructed with carefully aligned elements, the final HTML that Freeway outputs is particularly efficient.

This workthrough shows how the initial layout for the Vortex site (www.vortex.uk.com) was put together, including Freeway’s ‘live’ graphic text and automatically-generated CSS styles.
Adding extra master pages, dealing with graphics formats and making links will be shown in a separate Design workshop.

The Vortex site uses a strong (if simple) grid structure, both for the final appearance and in the master Freeway document used to design the pages.
